Cheryl Chan

Research Scientist

Dr Cheryl Chan leads the adventitious virus and endogenous viral reactivation efforts in SMART CAMP, with a particular focus on developing cell-free safety CQAs by rapid and sensitive detection of extracellular RNA. Dr Chan obtained her Ph.D. fromNational University of Singapore (NUS), M.Sc. in Infectious disease, Vaccinology and Drug discovery (University of Basel and NUS) and B.Sc. (Hons, NUS). Dr Chan enjoys understanding humans - be it behavioural (in her past time) or on a molecular and cell level (hence her research). Her research philosophy centres on understanding regulation juxtaposed to dysregulation, primarily in the fields of oncology and infectious disease to identify novel strategies for intervention.

Dr Chan undertook her postdoctoral research at the University of Oxford’s Department of Oncology where she studied dysregulation of post-translational influencers of the E2F regulatory circuit that are critical determinants in hormone-dependent cancers. Interestingly, chronic infection with certain viruses have also been strongly associated with certain cancers, providing another model of cellular and molecular dysregulation through which she dissected p53-dependent mechanisms underlying hepatitis b virus-associated hepatocellular carcinoma at NationalCancer Centre Singapore. Fascinated by the interplay at the virus-host interface, Dr Chan continued her research at SMART’s Infectious Disease group to develop host epitranscriptome-directed antiviral strategies to influence health versus disease outcomes in dengue virus infections – a nod to where she first began her antiviral research using drug escape mutants to elucidate the mechanism of action of small molecule dengue virus inhibitors at Novartis Institute of Tropical Diseases.
